Risk Assessment and Evaluation

Special consideration should be taken while planning a trip abroad. There may be unexpected issues that travelers experience and it is important that the individual and appropriate offices work together to prevent or mitigate these risks to the best of their abilities.  University Risk Management may provide a risk assessment and/or on-site evaluation for international travel upon specific request.  Additional assessments will be required for travel that involves a country with significant U.S. State Department Travel Advisories or a country with Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions.

Travel Advisories

The university acknowledges that traveling to countries with State Department travel advisories may pose an increased risk to the university and its travelers due to an increase in unpredictable circumstances. An advisory can also be issued when the U.S. Government’s ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to closure of an embassy or consulate. It can be difficult for the university to contact a traveler in a country with a travel advisory. U.S. Embassies may not be available or easily accessible and a traveler may remain grounded in the visiting country. Travelers are advised to verify their destination country is in good standing with the State Department. You can view current travel advisories at the U.S. Department of State website.

Understanding Cultural Issues

Travelers will need to be aware of cultural issues in foreign countries. Laws and regulations can be very strict and differ greatly from those in the United States. Some special considerations regarding cultural understanding is the societal view of gender, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity. It is important for travelers to behave in a respectful manner when visiting other countries, and to be mindful of clothing choices and other cultural facets. University Risk Management advises all travelers to research their countries specific concerns prior to their departure, any difficulties regarding this should be brought to the appropriate office which may include University Risk Management or The Office of International Studies and Programs.

Illness and Emotional Stress

Travelers should ensure that they have all required/recommended immunizations before traveling abroad. Additionally, travelers should consult with their physicians to determine additional precautions that may be necessary for their safe travel.

Crime, Arrest, and Deportation

The Department of State, U.S. embassies, and consulates abroad can provide assistance to U.S. citizens incarcerated abroad. The State Department is committed to ensuring fair and humane treatment for American citizens imprisoned overseas, they stand ready to assist incarcerated citizens and their families within the limits of their authority in accordance with international law.
